A good morning, leads to a good day... so lets make sure you've got all the tools you need for a great start to the day!

One skill every student needs in order to succeed is the ability to consistently act in a productive way.

No... it's not the ability to muster up an unwavering amount of motivation (because that's something none of us can truly rely on to get us through the days)!

And the key to accessing this sort of productivity lies within your morning routine. Yes - your morning routine is going to be the deal breaker between having a successful and productive days, as opposed to have a draining and procrastination filled one.

Now this doesn't mean you need to be apart of the 5am club, or that you need to have completed the entirety of your to-do list before the clock strikes 6am (I mean, unless you really want to that is)! It simply means that you're providing yourself with a daily structure that allows you to start the day with a positive, peaceful and confident attitude.

And to help you do just this, here's 5 morning habits to help set you up for student success...

Make your darn bed

Taking the time to make your bed is a small but mighty way to start your day. Why? Because this habit will enable you to both start and end your day with a clean and fresh mindset.

Plus, ticking this one small task off your to-do list acts as a catalyst, encouraging you to start ticking off the rest of the tasks on your to-do list.

Stop checking your phone

When we wake up our brains switch from delta waves (which occur when we're in a deep sleep state) to theta waves, (which occur during a sort of daydreamy state). From here, our brain moves on to produce alpha waves (when we're awake but relaxed and aren't processing that much info).

If you immediately check your phone on waking up, you force your body to skip both theta and alpha state and move into beta state instead (which occurs when we are wide awake and alert).

The impact of this is tenfold, as not only does this prime our brain for distraction... but if we see something negative, it will trigger our stress response and put us on edge ALL DAY!

So, try to get into the habit of only checking your phone one whole hour after you've woken up!

Listen to Positive Affirmations

As I mentioned above... when you first wake up your brain switches from delta, to theta waves, which is an IDEAL time to tap into your subconscious mind.

Listening to positive affirmations that relate to your goals or aspirations for the day (or for your life) first thing in the morning is going to help your brain drive your actions forwards, towards achieving these things!

Eat a Nutrient Dense Breakfast

We are what we eat. So, if you want to excel in your studies and maintain your productivity and energy levels throughout the day - you need to eat a brain food fuelled breakfast!

What foods support your brain health? Great question! Here's a list of just a few of the incredible foods you can start introducing into your breakfast:

  • Eggs

  • Berries

  • Grains

  • Nuts

  • Seeds

  • Leafy Greens

Get some natural sunlight & fresh air

Exposure to morning sunlight causes our bodies to produce serotonin (the happy hormone), which helps to reduce our stress levels, enhance our mood and our health!

So whether you open all your curtains and windows, step out into your garden or head out for an early morning walk - try to find a way to get some natural sunlight soon after you wake up!
